In this tutorial, I will show you how simple it is to set up Microsoft Office Word 2007 for posting WordPress posts to your blog.  It’s a really nice feature for those who spend a lot of time writing their blogs in Word and then pasting them into WordPress, or for those whose posts are text dominant.  There is a limited amount of functionality compared to the regular WordPress interface, but it’s still worth considering.

First, you’ll want to open a new document in Microsoft Word.  Following that, click on the Office Button, click on Publish, then click on Blog.

Since it is your first time publishing a post through Microsoft Word, you’ll see a window pop up that suggests you to register a blog account.  Click on Register an Account to proceed.

In the new blog account window, select WordPress from the Choose your blog provider dropdown menu.

Finally, you will be asked to type in the web address to your blog.  You’ll notice a formula is set up in the Blog Post URL textbox that shows you where to place your blog URL.  Also notice the portion that says /xmlpc.php. This is a vital portion of the link because the xmlpc.php file is where the communication between the blog and Word take place, so make sure that it is not deleted by accident.

For example, if i were to enter my credentials, I would enter http://www.brettwidmann.com/xmlpc.php for my site.  The login would be my User Name and Password that I would typically use to log into the WordPress Dashboard.

If your URL and login credentials are correct, you will see the following notification:

You will now be able to write your posts in Microsoft Word 2007!  Another neat little feature is the fact that you can assign categories that you have previously used in other posts while publishing through Word 2007.

The Word 2007 blog feature also has support for the following blogs/providers:

  • Windows Live Spaces
  • Blogger
  • SharePoint Blog
  • Community Server
  • TypePad

There’s also the Other option in case your blog doesn’t fall under any of the above options.  Also, there’s a link for people who don’t have their provider listed.
