Nanobot Extreme!!! Ver. 0.3.5

logo

Hello Everyone!

I would like to thank everyone who tested out the first version of Nanobot Extreme!!! that I published to the site awhile back.  After receiving massive amounts of feedback, we went back to the drawing board and took all of the submitted feedback into consideration.  Here are some of the following updates and considerations we’ve implememnted:

  • Re-vamped the instructions and story menu and divided them into separate sections
  • Tweaked the molecules so that less are spawned per level
  • Adjusted the Boost Meter so that players have more boost
  • Added light transitions from menu to menu
  • Incorporated a level up feature and the Nanobot can now die
  • Added an intro level
  • The enemy now deploys CFCs that damage the nanobot
  • After cleaning up the map of enemies and molecules, the level finishes
  • Upon death, you are taken back to the map screen

Along with all of the above mentioned, we also cleaned up a lot of the code and how certain events are handled. We also added clouds to the levels. This is the version that presented for our class with the exception of fixing the boost meter on the second level.  Below are some things to look out for when playing this latest version:

  • When the character dies, the player is taken back to the map screen
  • The molecules have been slowed down significantly in this version, for testing purposes
  • When the character beats the second level, the player goes back to the same map screen when defeated
  • If the player wins the second level and plays it again, all level up features are still applied
  • There is a counter in the code that determines how much life the nanobot has
  • The life stays the same, no matter how many times the player levels up

Even with the mentioned things to look out for, we again are still very proud of this release and how much we accomplished in the week we had after all of the feedback we’ve collected.  Check back soon for upcoming news and updates.  Until then, give the latest version a try!

WordPress 2.9 Upgrade Advice

logo

Hello everyone!

For all of you that have noticed, there’s a new (and important) update available for WordPress. Version 2.9 features can be found here.  I write this post for people who have had troubles upgrading their WordPress in the past or recently using the automatic service provided. A typical problem with automatic upgrades looks something like…

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 34554432 bytes exhausted (tried to
allocate 2355240 bytes) in directory_path/public_html/wp-includes/http.php
on line 1331

Scary issue, am I right? I certainly was a bit terrified and immediately thought that I would have to upgrade the CMS manually.  This made me shudder on the inside and I began to panic.  One source told me to try to find the default values for the memory limit and adjust it to either 16 MB or 24 MB.  I thought that this was a wonderful idea, but none of the methods of approach worked for me.  In fact, I caused Error 505′s to pop up a few times.  A part of me panicked again, and was fearing that I wouldn’t be able to keep my site up to date.

I had realized that the problem paralleled with the resource issue I have had recently with FireFox.  My install of FireFox has been running very sluggish and draining many resources lately and I realized it had come from the abundant number of addons I had installed and enabled for my browser.  I decided to give the idea a shot with WordPress, EXCEPT that rather uninstalling the plugins, I disable them. Lo and behold, this post has been written from WordPress 2.9 :)

If anyone is having any troubles with their upgrade or are having a similar problem and didn’t find the above methods clear, feel free to leave a comment.  Also, if anyone has any alternatives to the problem, feel free to let me know and I will update this post accordingly, with name and site cited as a source.

Nanobot Extreme!!! Ver. 0.1.1

logo

Hello everyone and thank you for your patience.

We have finally put together a working demo of our game for you to test out.  For those of you who do not attend UWSP, the premise of the game course we have is for each group to spend a significant amount of time researching an assigned game and to be able to implement animation and game play styles into our own game.  Another constraint is that our game is supposed to have an environmental theme or concept included as well as provide some educational value.  With that being said, the games created are rather simplistic, so keep that in mind.  The game we needed to analyze and work from was the game Flow, which can be played here

Joe, Jeff, and myself would be extremely grateful if you could leave some feedback on some of the playability and what you liked/disliked about the game.  Some of the issues we know we need to fix include:

  • Getting the level up feature to work on the main character
  • Expanding upon the enemy AI and the abilities of the enemy character
  • More levels and transitions from level to level.

Those are the three most significant pieces that we have come up with.   There are a few other things that I have noticed that could use room for improvement, but I would rather hear all of your thoughts and opinions first.  Before playing our game, I strongly recommend playing Flow first in order to get a better idea of how our game functions.

Nanobot Extreme Screen Captures Pt. 2

logo

Here’s some fresh new screen captures from the latest testing of Nanobot Extreme!!! We’ve combined all of our parts so that now we have a file that has everything tied together. We’ve also cleaned up the code a little, got the hit detection working, the skeleton code for the UI and leveling up has been written and still needs to be implemented. I can promise you that a working demo will be up within the next 24 hours for public testing. Please leave feedback in the form of a comment in order to help us improve gameplay! We’re really proud of the game and the work we have put into it, and we want to continue with it even after the class is done with.  Enjoy the new photos!

Events in Flex 3

logo

The following tutorial demonstrates how events can be handled in Adobe Flex Builder 3 using an event listener or listening through the MXML code.  When finished with the code, you should see an Alert window pop up, and two events being fired simultaneously when a button is clicked.  You’ll also notice an event being fired to clear the text when a button is clicked.

Unfortunately, I cannot give out the source code for this project, as it is intended to be a tutorial for students at UWSP.

Happy coding!
